The internal disclosure of variable infrastructure cost to the consuming team, business unit, or product owner without an accompanying funds transfer. Showback is the federation-preferred entry posture for cost accountability: it preserves the central engineering ledger while inducing optimisation behaviour through visibility. A showback report is not federation-grade unless it is produced on a fixed cadence, includes a unit-economic frame, and is signed by the producing FinOps function. Showback is not chargeback and the two terms must not be used interchangeably in published evidence.
Coined in mainframe-era IT chargeback discourse; the showback variant rose in the early 2010s as cloud spend exceeded the boundaries of static cost centres.
Federation accreditation accepts showback as the minimum demonstration of cost accountability for an organisation in the inform phase. Phase-2 organisations must demonstrate showback running for at least two consecutive quarters before progressing to chargeback. UFMS-001:2.4(b) controls the form.
